Background History

Hippodrome Solar Powered Ferris Wheel

Pacific Park held the first solar powered ferris wheel in the world, making the ferris wheel weigh up to 1.5 million dollars. Pacific Park was first declared open on May 25, 1996, since then the amusement park has been growing and today Pacific Park recieves about 4 million visitors annually. The park was first contructed by Charles Looff who saw the potential of Santa Monica becoming a landmark attraction. Looff began to contruct and soon completed what was the start of the fair with a building with a merry-go-round, one rollercoaster, and a funhouse. Not long after the contruction Santa Monica faced severe weather conditions and took down the roller coaster in the fair and soon the city Council's decided they wanted to demolish the pier.

This act from the Council's angered the people of Santa Monica and they decided to fight for their pier and start a "Save Our Pier Forever" campaign. This act changed and saved the pier and by 1988 the pier were going through major improvements. Also in 1975 the Hippodrome building and carousel were announced as a landmark in LA by the government. Today Santa Monica is known for great rides, signature foods, and LA's only free admission amusement park. They offer 12 rides, midway games, and an oceanfront food plaza!
